Hans Frei was born in Germany in 1922 to Jewish parents who converted to Christianity. He emigrated with his family to the US in 1938. After the war he became a respected Professor of Religious Studies and, for a brief period (1983-1986), Chairman of the Department of Religious Studies at Yale University Divinity School. The critical edition consists of an introduction, which examines the testimony, especially the dilemmas posed by conversion and hybrid identities, and an annotated commentary of the interview's transcript.
