Research Seminar

Theology and AI. Scott Midson is presenting 'Eros, erotics, robotics: Towards a critical reading of perfection in lovotics' at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine seminar on 2nd May. Public Lecture

Religion and politics. Public lecture: "War and Peace: The Birth of International Law" at the John Rylands Institute, 27th April, 5pm. The evening will be chaired by Dr Michael Hoelzl and Professor Andrej Zwitter (University of Groningen) who will present a theo-political investigation on Hugo Grotius, the founding father of international law as we know it today. This evening will offer a unique opportunity to see the Rylands very rare first edition of Hugo Grotius’ ground-breaking work on war and peace De jure belli ac pacis libri tres of 1625 and other first editions of key works which laid the foundations of our contemporary understanding of war and peace. Sherman Conversation Application Extension 30 April

Jewish Studies. The Centre for Jewish Studies is pleased to announce the Sherman Conversation 2023: ‘Encountering Others, Encountering Ourselves’: Reflexivity and the Jewish Studies Researcher, 4 September 2023. This workshop seeks to explore collaboratively and reflexively our positions as Jewish Studies researchers in relation to the Jewish subjects we study. We invite applications from researchers at all career stages working in Jewish Studies, broadly defined as scholarly engagement with Jewish subjects, past and present. Further information.

Manchester Wesley Research Centre Annual Lecture

Methodist Studies. The 2023 annual lecture will be given by Dr Cheryl J. Sanders, Professor of Christian Ethics at Howard University School of Divinity. The title of her lecture is: ‘Holiness and Black Consciousness: The Social Witness of Black Saints, Shepherds, and Sages’. Religion and Art. Hon Research Fellow and recent PhD awardee Siobhán Jolley spoke to the Right Rev James Jones as part of a special radio 4 Easter programme, focusing on the the little-known story of Holy Saturday, the early Church’s dark night of the soul, art at the National Gallery, among other things. BBC Report

Alumni Activity. Recent alumnus Harry Farley had a big series of reports on the Today programme on Sheila Seleoane, the woman whose body was undiscovered in a flat in London for over a year. It was very moving, effective and far-reaching reporting. You can find a text version of the report "Why was my neighbour's body not found for two years?" and the article "What we can learn from a lonely death in social housing".

Methodist Studies Seminar

Methodist Studies. The next Methodist Studies Seminar will be hosted by the Manchester Wesley Research Centre and Cliff College at Nazarene Theological College in Manchester and online on Friday 12 May 2023. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. The programme and registration link can be found here. Methodist Studies Seminars provide an opportunity for established and emerging scholars of Methodist Studies to present the findings of their research. We conceive of Methodist Studies broadly and aim to provide opportunities for students of history, theology, literature, art, material culture and other fields related to Methodism.
