Film studies. Jonathan Hourigan is chairing a conference, NOTES ON BRESSON, 30-31 March. The conference marks 80 years since the release of Robert Bresson's first feature film, Les Anges du Peche and 40 years since the release of his final film, L’Argent. Bresson's uncompromising approach to filmmaking, the ethical and spiritual enquiry embedded in his films and his singular, distinctive conception of cinema combine to ensure that he remains a hugely influential figure. Speakers include filmmakers, writers, educators, philosophers, film studies academics, curators, theologians and fine artists. For students of Religions and Theology, those films that draw on Christian literature and especially Bresson's unmade film of Genesis may be of particular interest. The conference devotes its final session to Genesis, with the participation of Professor Sean Burt (North Dakota State University). Free registration for UoM students. Register here.
