Social responsibility, widening participation
Oxford and Manchester collaboration. Clive Agnew, Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, spoke at the launch of the Goldsmiths Centre for Philosophy and World Religions at the Whitworth Council Chamber, University of Manchester, 28 Nov 2019. The new centre is associated with the OxNet programme, with which the Dept of Religions & Theology is partnered. The programme is designed to attract A-level students located in the North of the UK, selected by Pembroke College, Oxford, with the aim of encouraging the study of religions and theology at university, among other areas in the humanities. Michael Hoelzl will co-ordinate an OxNet evening seminar series given by Manchester-based lecturers entitled ‘Religion and Knowledge' (early 2020) and Ketan Alder and Kamran Karimullah will host and contribute to the Easter 2020 OxNet conference, also located at the University of Manchester. 28 May 2021

OxNet widening participation. The OxNet programme, which partners the Dept of Religions & Theology with Oxford University, is designed to attract A-level
students located in the North of the UK, selected by Pembroke College,
Oxford, with the aim of encouraging the study of religions and theology
at university, among other areas in the humanities. Pembroke College is recruiting graduate students to act as tutors on the annual OxNet/Pembroke Access Week Summer School. Due to the uncertain landscape over the summer, Pembroke will be running this event online this year, between Monday 2nd August and Friday 6th August.
The Summer School is designed to give Year 12 pupils from link state schools in Northern England and London the experience of university study and life. Deadline 7 June 2021. Further information.

Congratulations to student essay winners. Niall Hall, Abbas Abid, Matilda Miller, and Wiktor Mazurenko were participants in OxNet 2020 and were asked to write a 2000 word essay on 'Philosophy and World Religions' during the Easter break, with questions set by lecturers in our Dept who taught the series 'Religion and Knowledge' this year. The OxNet programme, which partners the Dept of Religions & Theology with Oxford University, is designed to attract A-level students located in the North of the UK, selected by Pembroke College, Oxford, with the aim of encouraging the study of religions and theology at university, among other areas in the humanities. One winner was selected per category and special Commendations were also awarded for work which was especially strong. Further information.

at university, among other areas in the humanities. This year's seminar
programme theme, designed by Michael Hoelzl, is on 'How to Change the
World with Words' with sessions led by Michael Hoelzl on 'How to do things with Words', Katja Stuerzenhofecker on 'How to find the right words and how to take your word for it: Interpretation, testimony and power', Clare Radford on 'Can sharing lived experiences create change?', Stefania Silvestri on 'Words on Objects, Objects with Words', Holly Morse on 'The First Woman Question: Eve and the Women’s Movement', and Scott Midson on 'How AI is changing the world with words: Communication and chatbots'.
The live online series will take place fortnightly 9 February to 23 March
2021. It is organised by Felix Slade (Pembroke College, Oxford) and
